The US had granted Hungary and Turkey an exemption from sanctions it had imposed on Russia’s Gazprombank relating to gas payments, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó Thursday in a video posted to social media.
“Today they have given an exemption for gas payments relating to Gazprombank, which is good news, but in the meantime we have worked out a solution with our regional allies, an alternative mode of payment, which does not violate sanctions but allows payments (for gas),” Szijjártó told a reporter in New York, in the video.
The Hungarian government has requested that Washington authorities exempt Gazprombank from sanctions – which could cause serious difficulties – to allow payment for the gas deliveries by the countries in the region.
“I have indicated to the American secretary of state that this is the kind of measure that could cause trouble for allies,” Szijjártó said earlier this month.
Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said today that Turkey, which imports almost all its gas requirement and providing more than 50% of its pipeline imports from Russia, has also received an exemption for gas payments.
